Upgrading HD..

I want to improve performance on my mac, and it has been recommended that I upgrade my hard disk before increasing RAM.

I would like (or can really only afford!!) 80gb, 7200 rpm.

Can anyone recommend a HD.

Thanks.

For the best performance, get one with 8 megs of cache. I got an 80 gig 7200 rpm with 8 megs of cache from Googlegear.com for a bit less than 100 with shipping, only 3 dollars more than the same size and speed drive, from the same manufacturer, with only 2 megs of cache at Sam's Club... and the speed difference is phenomenal.

As for HD vs RAM, it depends where the bottleneck is. If you already have enough RAM that your system isn't paging to disk a lot, adding more won't increase the speed much. Increasing the speed of your hard drive will increase the speed of the system though. Just don't try to use all 80 gigs as one partition... divide it into several so less of the disk gets scanned when you try to launch something. (speaking from a mostly PC world, here, but I'd assume the same basic info applies to a mac)
