Upgrading to gigabit switches?

I work in a fairly large company with a mix of pc's and macs. We're trying to convince IT to upgrade the switches to gigabit. My problem is I can't find any specs on what kind of improvement to expect in the real world. All the articles I find are 2 or 3 years old and not very helpful. Has anyone actually upgraded to gigabit switches in an enterprise environment? What kind of speed jump have you experienced. Where are you finding the bottle neck? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have a dell cluster on work using gigabit network between 32 nodes. I am not very familiar with all. I just know ppl complain about the latency of the gigabit ethernet. The bandwidth seem to be fine. I think I heard them say it should be possible to get 100mb/sec..
