Upgrading to OSX 10.4 and getting an error reading

I'm currently running OSX 10.3.9 on a G4 dual 867 MHz Power PC with 512 MB DDR SDRAm of memory. When I load the OSX 10.4 disc 1 in, the install window pops up for all the install features. When I click on the Install OSX and Bundle Software icon, it asks me to restart and then proceeds to load the software.

After it restarts and begins to load the dvd disc, the Apple icon appears and the pinwheel starts to spin. After that it gives me an error reading that says I need to hols down the restart key and power back up. In the background it shows a bunch of various codes and items you don't typically see. If I restart it does the same thing.

I also tried to start up holding the option key and that took me down the same path! Any Ideas???
 
That's a kernel panic, and it means something went so wrong that no error handler could "handle" the error and continue.

Where is the 10.4 disc from? Another computer? A retail copy? What's the front of the disc look like, and what does it say?
 
It's from Apple Education bundle pack and it is gray with a white rim around it. It says "For Mac Computers - Mac OS X Install disc 1 & 2 version 10.4.8

Is all the RAM in the computer factory-supplied RAM, or have you added any 3rd-party RAM to the machine? If the latter, try removing any 3rd-party RAM and then boot from the DVD. If that's successful, then after you have completed the installation of Mac OS X 10.4.8, try re-adding the 3rd-party RAM.
 
Original RAM, I was thinking maybe I needed more memory to handle the system. Only one card in the memory slot - 512 MB. When I open the MAC HD Icon, that page lists at the bottom that I have 25.21 GB available, but when the disc menu popped up - it only said 147 MB available. Not sure if that meant disc space or actual computer memory space! Thanks
