Uploading to BT webspace

Hi,

I wonder if anyone has had the same problem as me and can offer any help:

I use Transmit to upload stuff to my website. The website is hosted by BT. I can connect to the ftp server with no problems as long as I connect to the internet via my BT broadband account. If I try to connect to the BT FTP server via another broadband connection (for example when I'm at my friend's house or at work) I get an error message saying, "Could not connect to server 'ftp.btinternet.com'. Connecction timed out or server hung up."

I can connect to other FTP servers with no difficulties (either using BT broadband or NTL at my friend's house or at work) so I don't think it's a firewall issue and I'm using the same computer (a laptop running OS X 10.4) at each location so it can't be the settings on the computer.

I've tried speaking to BT but they've been less than helpful (basically said they didn't know) so I'm hoping someone may have encountered this problem before or have some words of wisdom.

Thanks all.

Do you know what FTP PASV mode is? You should try that....some providers require it--it's usually a checkbox in the FTP client software--it might require it so long as you're not on BT's network. They also may simply block you if you're not coming from their network, much like many ISPs do with SMTP traffic.

Thanks so much for the reply. I have actually tried Passive mode to no avail. I think your second suggestion, that they block you if you're not on their network, is probably correct. However, if that is the case, I'd have expected the problem to be more widely known. I can't seem to find anything on the net about it and even BT didn't seem to know.
