I bought a Macbook for my kids yesterday, and I am in need of a filter to block sites and apps. Many friends online recommend that I should buy internet filter for mac.But I found it is not free. I have no idea whether it is worthy of the money. Is there anyone can tell me where I can find the free one for my kids? I'd ask you guys cause you know everything.Thx in advanced.
First since you have kids you know kids can be more savvy with computers than you. So an easy way to block kids is through DNS blocking. Luckily you can use the free DNS service at OpenDNS.com. They have an instructional video and how you can use a free account to block web sites via DNS.
Plus in OS X 10.6.x you can open System Preferences->Accounts and make separate accounts for each child (make sure you use standard accounts when making the kids Accounts). Then in System Preferences->Parental Controls' to limit the kids accounts. So the key is make sure the "kids" don't get you administrator account password, that is important!
Lastly just a little parental supervision can go along way when the kids are on the computer!
