Usage of my Mac

Hi all,

just wanted to say: I just registered and hope to have to good time with all of you here! Since there was no introduction Forum, I posted this now here.

Anyways, a few months ago I finally got a 15.4 Powerbook G4 with OS X and iLife and stuff. I admit that I have used Windows PCs and Laptops for most of the time, but that was I couldn't buy a Mac. You know, money... :D But now I got this Powerbook and got rid of all the other PCs and Laptops. Except for one AMD Computer, which runs Linux and is my Internet gateway. I use the PowerBook as my primary computer, it can do all the tasks I want and need far better than any PC. In the next few days I hope to get a new iMac G5 as my primary computer, then I can take the laptop with me everywhere I go. I mostly do web surfing, music listening, play games, watch DVDs and this stuff on the Mac.

So, that's how I use it...

Welcome to the forum HomunQlus. I am sure you gonna enjoy your 15.2'' powerbook and the forum as well.

15.4, 15.2 - I simply call mine a 15" PowerBook, since that's clear enough. ;) Either way: Hi, HomunQlus. :)

HomunQlus,
Welcome. You will find the people on this forum to be extremely knowledgeable. Glad you are enjoying your PB. I love mine, would not live with out, both work and pleasure. :) :) :)

Yea the people on this site are pretty smart. Gonna give some life to this thread, the following is what I do with my computer. On my eMac 1 Ghz it burns data DVDs directly through the finder, Video DVDs through iDVD, copies CDs and DVDs by turning them into .dmg's through Disk Utility. And of course iTunes and it's burning abilities. I also noticed the drive's abilities to burn to DVD+R's and DVDRWs, the DVD+R's and DVDRWs work fine in the finder, but they wont burn in iDVD at all, so the only format compatible with iDVD is normal DVD-R's.

Aside from that i do all the normal stuff 24/7 like watching movies, tv episodes, listen to alot of music, cruisin the web, taking pictures and building a photo library, and thanks to the new iPhoto 5 muh digital camera can take movies too which are completely compatible with iMovie. I play alot of modern games like halo, jedi knight academy, spider-man 2, various sims, wolfenstein and ghost recon, which all have amazing graphics. Im also emulating at any given time a bunch of old school gaming consoles like NES, SNES, gameboy advance, Sega Genesis, n Nintendo 64. Also I can emulate Windows 2000 and Windows XP if I ever need to, and works amazing. Many devices are hooked up at one time like a printer, gamepad, wireless mouse, n digital camera. Sometimes if im bored I'll use some utilities to enable hidden features in OS X.

Since Mac OS X's programming environment is absolutely amazing, i find myself building software and messing around with graphics for software. I can barely figure 3D stuff out, that crap is really hard. Muh eMac has been invaluable for college. I use to use Word, but ever since Pages came out I got that, which is very cool. I use Safari for all my web browsing which is excellent for any kind of research, which happens alot for me. Pretty much any information is accessible through Sherlock or other web apps out there. Mac OS X also serves as an excellent server which is pretty convenient somtimes. Man and the list goes on and on, it's really amazing how much one person can do with one computer.

Hey everyone Im new here also. I have had my dual 1.25 ghz g4 mirror door mac since summer of '03. I want to use it for graphic design and 3d stuff. Mainly Maya. I use g5's at my school and thats where Im studying to be a 3D animator. Other programs I use are Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects and Final Cut Pro. I love my mac and will continue to be my primary computer.

If I were you I would upgrade the video card in your G4. You will see a good jump in speed and the G4 will last real well at least for another two years, especially with Tiger coming out.

Heh, I have an even older one, a Sawtooth I bought in Jan 2000. This last December, I finally decided to buy a processor update, so now it's running at 1.4 GHz rather than 450 MHz. That put a lot of life back into it, I can tell you. ;)

I bought the original Radeon when it came out. Still have that - thinking of upgrading that sometime or another. (Does that original one even have a number? Not listed in System Profiler if it does.)
