USB 1 or 2

My son wants to buy a new DVD recorder and the one he wants is for USB 2. How does he find out if his iMac is USB 1 or 2?

Or simpler: System Profiler. It's already in your /Applications/Utilities folder. The tab about USB should show you a "highspeed" interface for USB 2 with "up to 480 MBit/s". If it doesn't, it's USB 1.

Thanks both. He's since found out from a friend with the same model that it's USB2. The first thing I looked at was System Profiler but I still can't figure it out. I can't see any reference to 'highspeed interface'. I've attached a pic of the USB info, what should I be looking for here, please?

From the picture you showed, it looks like it's saying it might be USB 1.1 (from the "speed" section in the bottom part). USB 1.1 has speeds up to 12 Mbps while USB 2.0 has speeds of up to 480 Mbps. Were you able to find out which model iMac you have from the pages I gave you?
