I have been using a Stereo-Link 1200 with excellent results. It takes usb audio from your Mac and connects directly with the audio input of your stereo.
My experience with the unit is that the quality of the sound is much better than using conventional audio out (I'm measuring this with CDs as a reference) - it also does a great job of driving headphones.
I'm using this with a G3"pismo" Powerbook running both OS X and 9.1. Under 9.1 everything works transparently -- just turn the unit on and enjoy. OS X isn't quite there yet - sometimes you have to logout/login to OS X to recognize the unit. Once running there are no problems.
This is probably the best $150 I've spent on audio.
