USB ports are intermittent

I recently bought a unibody 13" 2.4ghz Macbook and have had USB problems since the day I got it (only 3 days ago). Basically, whenever I leave the Macbook idle for a bit (not necessarily till sleep mode), the USB hub is inactive when I try to use it. It doesn't happen all the time, just intermittently. I've tried two different USB hubs, both have external power sources, which I've tried with it on and off to no effect. I've done all the updates, and I even remember one of the firmware updates being specifically about USB port issues. I'm at a loss of ideas right so suggestions would be appreciated, thank you!

BTW I've tried both USB ports and there was no difference.

I would also like to add in that during heavy data transfer, sometimes the hub or port will stop responding. So hence my mouse and everything hooked up to the hub deactivates. This causes a system error which forces me to do a hard boot, the data transfer box doesn't go away and won't allow a shutdown or sleep with it open.

Are you using an active USB hub (which is powered through a power adapter) or a passive one? You might require an active USB hub if this is the case.

Also, make sure you keep the keyboard and mouse separate from the USB hub.

Yes I stated in my post that they both have external power sources. What would be the purpose of separating the keyboard and mouse? Even still, I haven't had my keyboard hooked up today and had USB port failures several times.
