USB-stick problem

I am having trouble moving files between a windows computer and a mac. When I save a file on the USB from the win.com. there is no problem, and when I extract it to my mac there is no problem. BUT when I delete the files from the USB stick, it looks like everything is okay (window of usb is clear, and therefore there should not be anything on it right?) But if I go to the settings for the USB to see if the entiry capacity of the USB is available again, then I find out that this is NOT so.

So basically my problem is that my USB tells me it is occupied, when in fact it is not, could it be something with the cooperation between pc and mac perhaps?

What do you think the reason for this is? and how could I fix it?

The problem is that I now have 3 different USB-sticks which are useless :S

You could simply format them with Disk Utility, though this would only circumvent the problem and not solve it (unless something's been wrong with the formatting before).

Most likely there are some Finder files, that tell where the files were etc. If you are fluent in Unix, use

to view the hidden files. You can delete them using rm command.

BTW: I have a USB stick I use also to transfer files between Windows and OS X. I did not see the extra files, until I used another PC. I guess the difference is, that the first machine had Vista, so Vista is more compatible to OS X than older versions ...
