Use DotMac as a webhosting site?

Can I use DotMac as a webhosting site? Currently I am using http://www.dreamhost.com/ as my primary webhost experimenting website cause I can easily use Transmit as an FTP client.

My domain name is www.kirktalon.com and here is one of my latest projects in progress http://www.kirktalon.com/andy2/.

Or is DotMac good only when used with Apple's software?

How about that transfering the domain name over?

Apple is often vague on its website in my opinion.

.mac isn't limiting the software you can use it with.
I most often use just subetha or smultron, and those don't have problems when I upload the files.
Haven't tried to transfer a domain name over, but it should work.

I used to develop websites full time. I recommend going with a company dedicated to web hosting, one with knowledgeable 24/7 tech support that's familiar with issues common to web publishing/hosting. The two I recommend:

1. www.crystaltech.com -- windows primarily, some linux servers and yes, totally compatible with any mac software

2. www.he.net -- not nearly as slick a user interface. Linux based.

Both support php, mySQL, etc. Both are well respected in the developer community.
