Use Time Machine only for Mail.app

Time Machine is not my ideal back-up solution, but I do want to use it for Mail. In TM prefs I have Excluded everything except

~/Library/Mail
~/Library/Mail-downloads
/Library/Mail

No luck, all that happens when I click TM is that Mail's menubar disappears.
Can you tell me what necessary files to "not exclude" to make this work?

The "plist" file

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

This is where all your mail settings are.
