User "short name"!

So, during setup I picked a dorky short name for myself (as it's presented as your potential mac.com email address and not as something the sytem will use). Unfortunately, I now find that's my shared folder name, also.

Problem is, the User Prefs won't allow me to change the short name (though it's the Admin account), and it tells me I don't have enough access to change the folder name! Only frustrating because I'm showing on the corporate network and anyone connecting to my machine as Guest gets to check out my dork name.

You can trivially do it using Netinfo Manager (as admin). Open users directory and change your name field.

There should be no danger, since this field is the only place your name (of any sort) is recorded in the system; all other places make a reference to it using the UID--do not change that one.

That was as far as the base system was concerned; if you have databases and/or other software which contains user catalogs, these will have to be edited, as well. You will know when they fail :) (in which case, reverse the Netinfo Manager steps until you have corrected the other catalogs)

Of course, the easier option is just to make a new user with admin privileges in the Users pane, move the files into the new folder, then just delete your old "dorky" account.

The short username is used for unix logins such as FTP, SSH, and so on as well as for showing the ownership of files and so on, so it is important to use a meaningful short username.
