Using a USB headset

I am a first time MAC user and hoping someone can help me with a queston.
I have a new imac and was wondering if it is possible to use a USB headset. I tried plugging it into one of the USB ports but the sound is still not coming through the headset. There is an audio line in port in the back but its not USB. Is there something that I am missing that will allow me to use this headset?

I do have an external USB Audio In/Audio Out adapter, and whenever I want to use its input or output, I have to go to

--> System Preferences
--> Sound
--> (either) Input or Output

and then choose USB adapter as the source for the input and/or output.

Same should apply to your headseat.

I am a DJ and musician, so I would like to add: make sure the volume is not up too high, or you might damage your hearing, in case you got the headset on, the volume is way up & you then change the output option.
