I've got a Apple LaserWriter Select360 connected to my WinXP PC. Can I print on the AppleLaserWriter from the Mac over the network? Thanks for any help.

I tried to add it as a TCP/IP printer. I added the PC's IP number and selected the appropriate apple printer. But printing doesn't work ...

You need to use the printer's IP address, not the PC's.

Did you try adding it under AppleTalk?

i am having the same problem, but i have a deskjet 812c printer. It is connected through a USB port wth a win xp printer on my network. The printer isnt recognized when i go to appletalk. Is there a program or something that can help me with this? thx

This is possible using SAMBA (a network protocol). You need to make sure that the Windows box is setup to Share its printer over the Network. Then you have to to clever things in the Print Center. Hold down ALT (option on some keyboards) when you click on Add Printer. Now from the drop down menu select 'Advanced' (it's right at the bottom, but won't appear unless you hold Alt down as you click on the Add button). The select 'Windows Printer via SAMBA' from the Device: drop down list. If you get this far you then point the Mac at printer:

smb://username:password@workgroup/computer_name/printer_name

and select a suitable printer model.

I've got this working for some printers on an old Windows 98 network, but not others. There are a number of pitfalls. These, along with helpful advice, can be found on the following pages:

I hope Apple do some more work on this so that people don't have to dig some deep under the hood to make this work.

Good luck. (and can anyone tell me why that thing that should be an at-symbol above is a smilie!)

Hi,

I'm assuming you have got the advanced option, but just not the SAMBA option. Make sure you are logged on as a user with admin privileges. Then start a terminal and cast the following unix rune:

sudo ln -s /etc/smbspool /usr/libexec/cups/backend/smb

You'll be asked for your password and you may also got some questions about whether you know what you are doing. Just say you do.

This should do the trick, though some people seem to need to do a restart before this gets the SAMBA option to appear in the Print center.

More very helpful advice can be found here:

WW's site was one of the places I used to get Mac to Windows Shared Printer working for me.
