Using external modem

I've got all required hardware, running OS X (TIGER) and im trying to hook the mac book pro up to a external monitor however it goes into dual monitor mode and i can't figure out how to get it to just show my desktop on the monitor. [:>( Any ideas?

I assume you just want to use the external display and not have a dual monitor setup? If so, with the external monitor connected, close you MacBook Pro's lid, and then wake it from sleep. Or, as you are restarting, close the lid. You can open the lid afterwards and the built-in display won't be active when used with the external monitor. You can reenable the built in monitor by detecting displays or by leaving the lid open when you restart.
