Does any one know how to modify the login in so that I can have a "UNIX-y" verbose login? I'm tired of hitting CMD-V at boot time.

Don't you mean verbose booting? (I'm not sure how the login could be any more verbose.)

Someone posted this a while back, I'll see if I can find it for you.
 
sudo nvram boot-args="-v"

just works as long as you stay in X
one boot in 9.x it is gone, and you have to do it again
