Verizon won't allow competing email addresses?

My Verizon DSL won't let me send emails with my Yahoo email moniker as the return address (I use Entourage, have OS 10.2.8). Whenever I send an email using my Verizon account, the recipient can only see my new Verizon address, not the Yahoo address I've been using for years. I've tried everything in the Accounts settings and spent hours on the phone with Verizon and hours on Entourage websites, to no avail. Anyone have a clue?

How about adding a title to your new Verizon account, like "Mockingbird" for "mockingbird@verizon.net", or just using your existing Yahoo account that still works? I guess I'm just confused as to why you don't work around the problem instead of solving it, as it wouldn't be incredibly pertinent if you used either of these methods.

Other than that, it sounds like what you're trying to do just isn't going to work. Again, you could just add a custom sender title that would appear alongside your new email account, so that the receiver would still know it was you.

So you are saying that when you send it through verizon's SMTP server that it is rewriting the from header to say that it came from your verizon address. That is wacked and non-conforming in the extreme. The only thing that they realistically should do is refuse to deliver the message and bounce it back to you. This is basically to prevent people from spamming and forging headers. If you do not have something set up wrong on your end (like accidentally having put your verizon address in your yahoo profile) you need to call verizon tech support and complain about it. Tell them that you need to be able to send email with your business address from your home computer.

If they will not turn this feature off for you then you should just get gmail. You can set it up so that all sent mail then goes out through the gmail server which will respect the "from" you use and relay it just fine. (There is a place where you can configure this in gmail) Then you will be golden.

Thanks for the replies, y'all. Exactly, Lurk, I want to send email from home with my business address. Verizon doesn't change the From header. It just gives me an error message, -3170, if I try to send anything with a Yahoo return address. Verizon told me it can't help as it doesn't support Entourage, only Outlook, and they wouldn't help with any settings that had to do with Yahoo. It looks like gmail is my answer...

Error 3170 is generally "SMTP host unreachable" or equivalent. Are you trying to send from the Yahoo address, but with the Verizon SMTP server? Or are you trying to send from the Yahoo address with a non-Verizon SMTP server?
