Very slow internet browsing

Browsing the internet on my PowerBook G4 is incredibly slow.

I have 3 browsers installed (Firefox, Safari and IE) and it's the same for all of them.

I'm on a 512k ADSL broadband connection and using the built in ethernet port. Browsing is slower than on 56k dial up! My housemate is connected via the same router to 2 different PCs and he has no problems.

Strangely, on my mac, email and ftp uploading don't seem especially slow.

Any idea what the problem could be?

I called my isp as well as apple and they have no idea. This is my first mac and I am not happy at all. My 2000 dollar powerbook browses slower than my 400 dollar dell. Did anyone find the fix for this problem?

In addition, if I power off my modem, then wait a few minutes before powering back up, the internet speed is back to the normal speed I would expect from my connection. After about an hour of continuous use, the connection gradually begins to slow down again.

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Have you actually looked and attempted the procedures given by martmedia? Sounds like the pages is describing the exact problem you're having.

I called my ISP and specified the ip addresses for the DNS servers and the problem was fixed! Thanks so much for your help, I was going nuts.

Check out this product, OnSpeed. its an internet accelerator which is compatible for your Mac. It sits quietly on your Mac in the background, and flexible enough for you to turn it on or off. Trials have showed that it increases dial-up speed to up to 10 times, some times, even more. Go and have a look - http://www.onspeedasia.com

I have what sounds like the exact same problem as the original poster. My internet speed on my new powerbook starts fast and then gradually slows to nothing over time. My boyfriend has a 4 year old macbook and he has no problems with the internet. It looks like the solution posted would work for me, but I'm not sure how to go about following it. I share internet with the person next door so I don't have an internet service provider to call. Is there any other way of finding out this information? I'm not very computer savvy so if someone could break it down for me I would really, really appreciate it. Thank you!
