Video doesn't show (projector)

When i hook up my Powerbook to a projector, everything appears to work fine. I see my screen on the wall.
However, when i play DVDs or music videos, it shows the video window on the wall, but the video is black or blank (my powerbook shows it running fine). Does anyone know what the issue may be?
 
are you using monitor mirroring (i.e. should the projector show the same picture as the internal monitor?) or extended desktop? what version of OS X is on the powerbook, what model of powerbook is it, what cables are you using etc.? Info, info, info. :)
 
i switched from both dual monitor (extended) and same screen (mirror). both don't show videos. But, it shows everything else.

things i am using:
- I am using a 12 inch powerbook,
- The DVI to VGA cord (i think thats what it is).
- Using OS X 10.4.6
