I have a video capture of my wifes last ultrasound. It weighs in at just over 1 gig, and about 30 minutes long. it is an .mpg, and was captured using an aurora fuse card.
I want to take key parts of the footage, in 5-15 second snippets, and save them as indivudal files.

What program do you all recommend? And could anyone offer pefhaps a rudimentary procedure for me to follow?

Hey geeky dad-to-be .. I thought dads normally give the baby's measuremements, not the video's .. ;) (but congrats in advance..)

Would iPhoto be too obvious choise for you? :-/

iPhoto for movie snippets? G, you need to find your reading glasses... ;)

Try using QT Pro to convert the video to full DV (takes lots and lots of disk space, though) and then importing it into iMovie.

Ok, Quicktime Pro was the 1st half of my solution. I actually did the editing in QTpro, and saved snippets as separate mpg's. This snippets however, are still too big for the web, is imovie what I need now to compress a 5 meg clip down to about a meg?
