Vidoe on HDD for Ipad and Air

Hi,

I am travelling soon and trying to find out if it is possible to save some movies etc onto a standard HDD that I can then watch through my Macbook Air or my Ipad. Can you please let me know if this is possible and if so what I need to do.

Cheers,

Carlyle

PS. I need the HDD to run without a seperate power source so I'm not sure if USB thumb drives would work, especially with the Ipad.

For the iPad, if it's not on the iPad (in other words, stored on the iPad's internal storage), you can't view it. There is no way to view movies from an external storage device on the iPad. Simple enough. You can use iTunes to "sync" movies to the iPad for later, offline viewing.

For the MacBook Air, you can definitely do this. You will need a "bus-powered" USB hard drive (USB thumb drives also work), like this one:

Simply copy the movie files to the external hard drive, then you can view them on the MacBook Air simply by double-clicking them... which will open them in iTunes, Quicktime, VLC, or whatever movie-file application you have set to view movie files.
