Viewing thumbnails when selecting a picture?

Hey guys.

I am a brand new Mac switcher and am finding my way around this new OS.

This forum looks like exactly the thing i was looking for to help me through this period, so thanks to all in advance for any help you can offer for this question and the others I will doubtless be posting.

WHEN selecting a picture file from a folder, say for choosing a new desktop picture in system preferences for instance, I can only see a list of file names listed. Is there any way of changing this view to display thumbnails of the pics?

If you press the "Three column" view near the upper left corner of finder, you can get a preview.

Also, you can enable a thumbnail if you're using the icon view, from the View menu, click "View Options". Enable "show icon preview".
