Virtual PC: No Internet

Greetings,

I found a similar thread on here, but it didn't fix the problem for me, so I'm posting this one.

I'm running VP6.1 in OS X 10.3.9, and it won't connect to the Internet. It used to. I haven't used it in a long time. Now it won't. I have no idea what might have changed.

I am connected to the Internet via AirPort connection to a NetGear wireless router. The Mac's Internet connection is fine.

In Windows in VPC I open Network Connections, and double-click Local Area Connection (which is enabled). I see the following:

Connection:
Status: Connected
Duration: 00:24:07 [this value increments each second]
Speed: 10.0 Mbps

Activity:
Bytes: 26,093 (Sent) 852 (Received)

I click Properties, and all of the following are checked:

Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

I double-click TCP/IP and these are selected:

Obtain an IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically

Now, I have also tried following the steps in this article, putting in a static IP address and DNS server. Still no go. The status bar in Explorer (Windows) will say "Opening page http://blahblahblah.com", but eventually it fails, and I get the "The page cannot be displayed" error page.

Here is the dump from ipconfig/all:

Oh yeah, in VPC, Networking is set to "Shared Networking".

Oh yeah, part two. Running Windows XP Home

I haven't used Virtual PC 6.1 since VPC 7.0 became available. However, the two versions work pretty much the same. I'm betting dollars to donuts that you attempted to setup your TCP/IP settings within Windows. Your VPC 6.1 Windows installation automatically gets its Internet connection from your Mac. Do not enter TCP/IP settings within Windows.

Hi MisterMe,

Do not enter TCP/IP settings within Windows.

Internet access fails whether TCP/IP in Windows is set to obtain IP and DNS automatically or values are entered. Neither works.

As illustrated, Connection Status shows status, speed and duration, but there are very few packets received compared to packets sent. That seems odd to me.

Any other ideas?

Thanks much for the reply,
DM

For anyone else having the same problem, I found the solution on another web site:

1- Click on Virtual PC and go to Preferences
2- Click on Scripting, and put a check in Show Scripts Menu
3- Click OK
4- Click on Scripts in the VPC menu and select Set Networking Type
5- Click Change and choose Shared Sockets
6- Click OK and now startup Windows

Now it's all good.

Peas-out,
DM
