virtual pc stuff: mounting .dmg's

27 houdini's

guy with great hairdo
i tried mounting .dmg with virtual windows xp os, but everytime i unpack one o' those .dmg's my computer says it can't find an application that supports its contents and virtual pc won't read dmg files. anyone got a clue?

dmg is a special image-format that is not supported by winxp. You will have to download a tool that can handle those images and works on winxp. check out versiontracker for winxp

A DMG is Macintosh-specific, so its not going to be something that Windows XP can use.

You can use Disk Copy to mount DMG files in OS X.

What exactly is in the DMG file in question?

The dmg contains a microsoft os i want to run on virtual pc.
So what i actually need is a bootable cd with windows 2000 or whatever so can run some some microsoft specific apps that i monitor online.
It's a bit of a catch 22 - I need windows to open the dmg to install windows so i can open the dmg!

Nope windows will never open the dmg. What you need is something like an iso or a cdr (I think that is what is what the extension is) VPC can mount those images just fine and make it look like they are part of the system to the PC.

My suspicion is that this topic is really getting close to breaking the warez rules of this site because you should have no problem with any legitimately acquired image. For instance I installed redhat from the downloadable iso images without a problem.

you've got a point there, so i ran to the mall and got me legit copy of windows 95!

I'm interested though in your experiences with optimizing virtual pc (as a newbie), because on my computer it's really slow. Put an impossibly heavy java based cms on top of that and nothing happens! Makes me consider to get an old PC aargh!

post your mac specs. It is slow, but actually fast enough to use simple apps. Office XP runs pretty fine for exmaple. You will need a lot of ram to be able to allocate at least 256 for virtualpc. Another thing is, that virtualpc 6 seems to be more optimized for winxp. But for this you should check other threads here. There are many discussion on this...

powerbook G4 1024mB ram 1 Ghz G4 60G, 7 days old!

Want to use internet exploder only, maybe some ftp app

should be fast enough. Try to get rid of win95 and get winxp, if you discover speed issues with your explorer even

Ditto here I have a 667 mhz TiBook and vitrualPC which came with XP Pro and it is OK, nothing to write home about though. When I installed Redhat and X on it it ran like a dog but then I tried it with Apple's X11.app and it worked pretty well. From what I understand they have optimized display drivers for Win XP which make things faster. Anything else like Linux or Win 98 and you are doing non-optimized drawing inside the emulated box. That is totally dog slow.
