Is only for users follow W__D___S users to buy antivirus but for palm and macosx were is the danger ?
Is the danger real for alternate OS ?

Sorry for my writing english I'm French and don't write English all the day.

Thanks for your answer.

First off...welcome to the forums! Hope you enjoy your stay.

Now...in reality there really isn't a life-threatening virus out there for the Mac platform. Sure there are small viruses, but those are more of a "joke" than a threat.

But you never know. With the Macintosh becomming larger and more known in the world people may start to develop viruses, thus the Anti-Virus software.

Hope I could help a little. :)

I think most virus writers want to take down as much as possible - Mac has a pretty small market share but it is growing rapidly now compared to the past 5 years. There's also the issue of Macs now having the bragging right of our "bullit proof" OS - I would think there's at least one Windoze virus author with his gun aimed at OS X. - john.

Hi Batiac :)

I have NEVER seen an OS X native virus. There are a few, but in classic, so they need the os 9.x or previous to work. And some Unix, but even those are hard to make them work in OS X.

More annoying are windows viruses. I get them in email, of all outlook-using windows friends friends etc. Those viruses do nothing.

So, no real worry. I know _one_ mac user that has once seen a mac virus. For classic. Some years ago. ;)

I couldn't even name a anti-virus program for Linux.

Unix type operating systems just don't have a history of viruses really. Crackers breaking and entering yes... but few, if any, viruses. Not enough for someone to spend time virus definition based antivirus software anyway.

Windows has the killer combination of being the most common (both widespread and peasant-like) OS and the OS most susceptible to hacks, cracks, viruses, and so on. That is why you see headline after headline of viruses and worms taking down quadrillions of Windows computers.

Mac OS X has the advantage of being a relatively small percentage of the computer population and being as secure as possible out of the box. Therefore, you should have no need for a virus program.
