Virus/Worm in Microsoft Word

I'm brand new to this and I'm looking for help. I have scanned my computer with ClamXav and I have a marco worm in Microsoft Word files called W97M.Thus.A I can isolate the files but as soon as I go to make a new Word document it is infected as well. It doesn't affect my computer but I can't send Word documents to anyone with a PC because their computer detects the virus and won't let them open it. Is there a way to remove the virus/worm all together? Thanks, Matt

Have you tried removing the affected file? Is it a file that's necessary to run Office? You can also try removing Office and reinstalling it.

Well, you could provide some background information.

01. System / MacOS X version installed. Mac model is optional.
02. MS Word version.
03. Within MS Word's [version 11.x] preferences (via 'Security') is a check box under 'Macro security' titled 'Warn before opening a file that contains macros' - which is by default check marked. Is your copy of Word's check box cleared or check marked?
04. Is the contents of the Word '.doc' file so confidential that you could not 'zip' the file and send said 'zip' file to me for checking?
05. Did you contact the person who sent you the infected Word document?, and if so - were they a PC or Mac'er?, and why did their computer allow the file to be sent?, etc.?

'Is there a way to remove the virus/worm all together?' - yes.

iBook G4
System 10.4.3
Word 10.1.6
I don't have the security option with my version of Word.
No, not confidential at all. Every new document I create is infected so I could send you a blank document.
I think I have had this worm for a long time without knowing it. I discovered it when I tried sending a file to a PC and it wouldn't accept. Then I scanned my computer and tons of my word files were infected so I have no idea who gave it to me.

Thanks for your time and help. I REALLY appreciate it.

I sent you a private message, please send the 'zip'ed file to me.

'Then I scanned my computer and tons of my word files were infected so I have no idea who gave it to me.', I can understand such; especially, when many '.doc' files are named the same when given or sent.
My intent was to see if you could determine the sender, make them aware of the macro'es, and such.

I do not currently have 'MS Word' v. 10.x; but, I am sure there is the ability to open a 'Word' document without any macros enabled, please see this link. Once the document is opened (with macro'es not permitted) and then saved, the file can be sent macro free.

If you save a Word document in .rtf format before sending, it will send the formatting but not the viruses.

Its starting to work! I found the "macro virus protection" in the general section of preferences and now I can create a doc without being infected. It would still be really nice to be able to clear the virus off of all the tons of docs that are infected but I'm thrilled to have gotten this far. THANK YOU!

I received the 'zip'ed 'Test document.doc'.

When the '.doc' file was dragged onto 'MS Word', no notice of an embedded macro was displayed.
When the file was dragged onto 'ClamXav' and 'Virex', no macro virus was detected.
Neither did Yahoo! e-Mail detect the compressed '.doc' file, as infected or questionable.

Another way to confirm that a '.doc' has a macro (not necessarily one with damaging intent) installed, is to drag it onto a text editor, such as 'Tex-Edit Plus'.

I am glad you were able to locate the 'macro virus protection' feature of 'MS Word' v. 10.x.

I can now create a new document without the virus but I still have tons of documents that are infected and I don't know how to clean them. Is there a way? Thanks, Matt
