Virus

It appears that I have become infected with a virus, but if it is a virus, it seems to be non-virulent-just annoying but causing no real damage. Awhile back I suddenly noticed that whenever I selected Macintosh HD, Documents or Applications, a big black box containing what look like file folders would appear above the normal listing of items in those categories. Selecting something in the list moves the folders and presents a view of something in the selected folder. As near as I can tell, this is a complete waste of screen space and just an annoyance. I have no idea where this came from; it just showed up from an unknown source, which is why I suspect it is a virus. I would appreciate some information as to how to get rid of it.

Sorry to disappoint you! :D
Not a virus - it's a feature of the Finder, and just an alternate way to view files, called Cover Flow.
Change to a different setting by going to the View menu, and choose another view, such as List, or Icons, or Columns view.
You likely accidentally changed that view setting to Cover Flow at some point.
One of Cover Flow's uses is to easily preview files. You can drag the divider bar between the files and the display area to change the relative size of the preview images. Making it big for pictures, or video files is especially effective. You can come up with other uses, too, I'm sure. Or, just use another view option.

Thanks very much for your rapid response to my question posed yesterday. The problem has been corrected, and I’m not “disappointed” that it wasn’t caused by a virus. It has been a worthwhile educational experience. When it showed up I knew that I had never intentionally requested anything like that, and I also believed that viruses come onto peoples computers from outside sources. Since it just appeared without my knowing how it got there, I made the asssumption that it must be a virus. The fact that it could have been caused by operator error never entered my mind.

As indicated above, I sincerely want to express my thanks for the education.

You also may not want to post your e-mail unless you want a bunch of Russian Brides from Nigeria trying to offer you a "100% Risky Free" opportunity to gain a substantial portion of Saddam Hussein's wealth with viagra added and vira attached!
