I have read similar topics and I must say that I am doing everything right. I have downloaded VLC, change the settings, inserted DVD, click "play" and nothing happens.

I have MacBook Pro :

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B00
SMC Version (system): 1.41f2
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

Will it help to purchase Quick Time Pro??

Thanks a lot!

You mean won't play DVDs from regions other than your own? This is normal. On some drives VLC acted as a region free player but by no means all. Quicktime Pro won't help either in thsi case.

It may or may not work...
With this I've so far managed to get the DVDs purchased from other regions to work:
1. On a new Mac, insert one commercial DVD of the region I want to keep, and set the DVD region on first count to that.
2. Quit DVD player.
3. Set the preferences for DVDs to be ignored, and not be opened by DVD player.
4. Then open them manually with VLC.
As long as the primary region is set, it should be able to read...

This said, as a backup we've set a way to view both 1 and 2 regions, my Macs being set to 2 and others to 1. So if else fails we watch from the other Mac.
Or of course the region free DVD player - if we ever feel like watching them over telly or via slingbox...
