Volume Drive Icon now has odd extension

On the volume drive icon on my desktop (new iMac 20" 2.66 ghz) there was never a name or extension below the icon until late last night, when some weird name appeared below the icon. It has this below the icon >,
(with the > underlined).

Is this normal, i.e. is this the name or extension of the volume drive?

If not, can I delete (or rename) it without compromising or damaging the volume drive itself?

Finally, does anyone have any idea how I could've actually added this extension without knowing it?

Thank you.

Yes, you can rename it. Click on the icon, then press enter. The icon text will be highlighted, and you can give your hard drive a new name.

I call mine "Icabod." You can call yours, "Banana," though.

Naming or re-naming your hard drive doesn't affect the data on the drive at all.

You could have added this extension by, say, clicking when you weren't looking... command-tabbing while you were distracted... started typing something or some command while looking at the keyboard instead of the monitor... pressing a bunch of keys on the keyboard to bring the computer out of sleep mode... any number of things.

To rename any file or folder in OS X, you typically highlight the icon (which can be done with the mouse, arrow keys, or by simply pressing the first letter of the name), press enter, then type a new name... it's very simple to do, and very simple to do accidentally.
