First, let me say thank you for this site. It's nice to know that before I do anything radical--like re-installing the whole system-- there is somebody who's willing to give suggestions.
I've been using Macs for many years and have been able to fix most problems with time -- but I can't say that my understanding of the system or computer terminology is very sophisticated.
Here's my problem. I have an iMac G5 1.8 GHz; 1.25GB DDR SDRAM, and recently I downloaded the final update of system 10.3 --.9
When I restarted the computer the startup volume was loud and thin. I have external speakers (harmon/kardon Soundsticks II), but the computer did not engage them upon restarting. Now, when I go to the system preferences, "sound," my system does not seem to recognize any "output device."
I have no sound at all, even when I detach the external speakers. Also in the system preferences, under "sound," the output volume arrow is transparent and it's at maximum volume, but I cannot move it and the "mute" box is checked, but that too is transparent and I cannot change it.
Also, while the keyboard keys that used to change the brightness of the screen still work, the keys to change the volume do not have any effect.
Finally, my iTunes no longer functions. The program still opens, but when I choose songs to play they meter showing the progress of the song does not move. Of course, there is no sound either.
I'm finding this very strange and frustrating. If you have some ideas, please let me know. Otherwise, perhaps you could explain how I might go about re-installing an older version of Mac 10.3
Sincerely,
Lou
