Volume up and down buttons stopped working on powermac G5

Hi,

The volume up and down buttons have stopped working on my Powermac G5. The buttons work as they bring up the little volume thing at the bottom of the main screen, but when you press up or down, a stop sign appears where the volume bars usualy are...

The sound stll works, but I have to adjust the levels in the sound card options pannel (M-Audio revolution 7.1)

Any ideas?!
