VPN Default Gateway

I am connecting my mac OS 10.3 to a vpn but I can't get the internet when I am conected. On my windows machine I had to uncheck a box that would tell the computer to use the remote networks default gateway when connected. After I unchecked that I was able to get on the web. Is there something like this in OS X or do I need to do something else?
