VueScan: How sweet it is, how sweet it is...

I downloaded and tried VueScan, a $hareware driver that supports many scanners. I have a Hewlett Packard 5300CXi scanner that up until now, only worked Mac OS 9. The benefit of VueScan is that its software scans images better than HP's. I took home some experiments from the lab to scan-in and print out to add to my note book. The HP software didn't even show a few colored bands on the TLC plate (I will try and upload a picture to show PROOF of VueScan being better than HP). Aside from the interface being a little slow and buggy, the software works very well. AND, what's even better, I can scan and do whatever else I want to do while it's scanning. With HP's software, I had to wait until the image was finished scanning before I could do anything else. Vuescan doesn't seem to monopolize the CPU like HP's software either. I highly recommend VueScan to anyone with OS X and a scanner.

The PROOF...

Left side of the image is acquired with Hewlett Packard scanning software. The Right side of the image is acquired with VueScan X. Notice on the right image a very faint pink band at the top of the TLC plate, near 5.5cm. This pink band is not observed in the left image acquired with HP software. No image manipulation was done to bring out the difference. Both images were scanned-in at 600 dots per inch.

ok, i'm still learning, but are there any applications that hog all the memory in osx? it seems to me that this is another of the great advantages of osx. Everythig runs in the background if you want it too. I can't think of anything i've used that doesn't work this way. Now, if only he would make vuescan to support umax astra usb scanners. I've just been scanning tonite in classic and whenever i quit the program (photo deluxe) it freezes and i have to force quit.

glad you got yours working, you lucky dog!:p

Ed, have you tried using MagicScan (umax high end software) in Classic without a photoediting software? You can scan directly from MagicScan to a file and then use Photo Deluxe to adjust the picture.
You can download MagicScan from the Umax site by saying that your scanner is one of the higher end models (I forget which one it is). I use it with an Astra 2000 and it works fine.

thanks for mentioning it. I got version 4.5.1 i believe - highest version available. its much easier to find if you use fetch or other ftp agent with an anonymous log-in to ftp.umax.com /scanners. i'll be trying it out and reporting back.:)
