I have thinking about buying a new mac. But then i dont want a new mac to come out in just a few months. So my question is should i wait?when will be the next update to the powermac line?Should i wait for the new g4 or g5 to release? I was thinking of getting one for my b day in sep but i could wait till x mas.

september would probably be a good time, because there is usually an update in summer, then again in January...

There will always be a release "just around the corner". If you want a new box, get one. Unless you know something is going to be released without a doubt in "days" don't wait. People have been waiting for the new 15" PowerBook which people have been claiming will be released "next week" every week since January, and hence people have been waiting to buy a 15" powerbook since jan. Computers will always get upgraded, and your computer will always be outdated before you get it home. You could always go the route I go, I always buy used computers a year or so old, so I don't have to deal with the depreciation. Think of it like buying a used car instead of new, plus you can just always upgrade procs/etc in older boxes to newer stuff as it comes out.

Remember, also, that when a new product is launched you'll have at least a four week wait (in the States) before it is shipping and available to you. In some cases, particularly for people overseas, up to 12 weeks!

So, if you're happy with the machine on offer and the price Apple are asking, go ahead. If it turns out a better one comes along a few months later, that doesn't change what you have, or make it any less useful.

If you are looking at desktops G4 towers, the prices recently dropped (of course I bought a DP 1 GHZ just before this...), so now seems a safe time to get one. I always choose the middle model (I have owned 10 macs I think) - it seems to always be the best deal and has the greatest staying power over the years.

Another aspect to take into cosideration is this: Even if Apple releases the new Powermac 970s in late summer or around January, you would still be buying a first-generation version. In my experience it takes most manufactorers a generation or two of their products to really get the bugs worked out.

Therefore, you should probably just spring for a system now. I just got the new 1.42 ghz system. I considered waiting and then thought that I'd be waiting until summer of NEXT year until I would really feel comfortable buying....and 1.5 years is a bit long.

These are just my opinions, however. The 970 systems are gonna be sweet so they may be worth waiting for, I just didn't think they were.

Cant thank you guys enough. What do you guys think would be more useful in the future me getting a 1ghz g4 or dual 867? If i am running many programs does the second processor help out or does the 2nd processor online work with special software designed for it?

A second processor will greatly help things if you're running more then one application at a time.
