was wondering what type of ram my g4 imac 17in flat panel has model number #M8935LL/A.thanks oh and getting a little confused since everymac.com says it takes DDR SDRAM and the memory finder says it takes 200 Pin PC2100 DDR SODIMM which is it.thank you for your timeand have a nice day

everymac.com says it takes DDR SDRAM and the memory finder says it takes 200 Pin PC2100 DDR SODIMM which is it?

Memory finder is right, according to Mactracker. I've checked that Everymac info and it too says PC2100. All the other lettering is definition that I've found confusing in the past.

SDRAM = Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory,
SODIMM = Small Outline Direct Inline Memory Module.
So what's the difference? As I understand it from researching, the first defines the type of memory being used, the second defines the physical type of RAM stick. You might find this article helpful (I did) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SO-DIMM.

Just to clarify here - your 1 GHz iMac needs two different types of memory. It has two memory slots. The user-accessible one takes a PC-2100 200-pin SODIMM. The factory installed slot takes a PC-2100, 184-pin SDRAM. Each slot takes up to 1GB capacity, but you need both memory types to fully expand the memory.

waithing for post mderator to look at post link i guess.but if i expand my memmory past the 1gb mark will it mess up my mac or will the excess just not be used.my mac requires 2100 266mhz but the mem site says 2700 333 will work

There's no downside to adding more memory. Your system will use any memory that you want to add, and that your Mac will support. There's no such thing as wasted memory! Yes, your iMac takes PC2100, 266 MHz RAM, and can also use PC2700, 333 MHz. You will also find that PC3200, 400 MHz will also work fine. But faster memory will not increase your Mac's speed. But, more memory is always used. You can upgrade to OS X 10.5 (Leopard), and Leopard likes to have a lot of memory to work at its best. ALL memory up to your supported maximum can be used.

Hello rangerfreak1 :)

I can relate to the confusion part ... as that G4 is an older model, a lot has changed since its release and a lot of modern RAM is backward compatibile (prob all modern RAM for all I know ... ;) ) and that's where it can be a lil' confusing ... for instance my iBook G3 has a max RAM of 320MB according to Apple but it can recognise 576MB and boy was I rapt when I discovered that. So some of the Apple documentation can be a little dated in that respect.

I found this thread which I think you should look at:

iMac G4 1.25 Ghz: 512 MB memory upgrade recognized as 256 MB only

It's for the 1.25GHz model but AFAIK, the RAM requirements are similiar.

I was looking at the new MacBook Pro RAM specs and while Apple claims this machine maxes out at 4GB RAM, iFixit.com have noted that the MacBook Pro's Montevina chipset appears to support up to 8GB, but that's an entirely different story but I'm sure in the future, MBP owners will be able to add more than the Apple max as newer technology is released..

i guess my primary question is will is reconize all of this memory that i want to buy at http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other World Computing/2700DDRS1GBC/ or do i need special memory for it to be reconized like the kind specified in the other posters html link that has to meet apple specs .i have an early model imac/g4 1.0ghz 17in model number M8935LL/A.sorry about all the questions i have not messed with macs since the quadra 610 so im a little out of date.thanks for your time everybody and have a good night

Hi rangerfreak1, that RAM checks out and this has already been posted by DeltaMac, see this post, whom I must add, is someone who knows his stuff ;)

Your specific model (M8935LL/A) and the model up from yours; (M9168LL/A) are similar in RAM terms and the 1GB PC2700/333MHz is backwards compatible with your mac.

my g4/imac M8935LL/A has an airport option that was never installed will air port extreme work with mine or is it too early of a model.i was looking for a 802.11g wireless option.thanks
