Ways in which Firefox can improve

Just thought I'd start a thread to reflect on ways in which Safari is better than Firefox (to summarise and send to the Firefox developers in a couple of days, once I've used the browser a little more).

My thoughts so far:
  • I miss the icon in the toolbar to go into the "Bookmarks manager"
  • I miss being able to open multiple bookmarks simultaneously with a single click (although this can be done in a slower way, via navigating the bookmarks menu)
  • I miss being able to click to close individual tabs (although this can still be done with command-W)
  • I actually prefer the brushed metal look of Safari and the look of the icons (i.e. More "Mac OSX like")

When you have more than one tab open, look over to the right on the window, there should be an (X) over there. That will close the currently open tab.

If you configure your toolbar tab into individual folders you then will have an option at the bottom of the folder to open in tabs.

Get some of the Firefox extensions.

One for putting an icon on the Toolbar for Bookmarks. It opens the side drawer.
Make folders in the Bookmarks tool bar to open multiple pages.
When you want to close a tab, as long as you're on that page, click the X at the end.
Under the Tools Menu>Get Themes and see if there's one you like.

More aesthetic than anything, the "upside down" tabs visually threw me off since I'm so used to seeing the tab connected to the menu bar rather than the page.

Since I use Safari in brushed metal mode, the default theme in Firefox looks so white! Without the brushed metal tabs, I find it gets a bit busy looking at the menu bar area.

It does feel faster than Safari in loading; not sure what actually constitutes faster in this case though.

Also, is there a way to enable turning on/off popup blocking with a keystroke?

I did find though that it does work better with some banking sites than Safari does...

I do like the numerous options that Firefox does allow you to have though; with some tweaking, I have it set up to function like Safari (new tabs in focus, etc) and I love the "Show images from originating site only" option (bye bye ads although this does kill stuff like webcam image feeds, etc.).

On the other hand, how does one flip between tabs (shift-command-left/right arrow in Safari)?

Ahh... A separate close button, rather than one for every tab. Interesting.

Better than Safari for closing multiple adjacent tabs, but worse if you just want to close a tab in the middle.

I think I prefer Firefox's choice, but it'd be better to make it a user preference, or just have both.

Thanks for that. :)

Good stuff. And I've now discovered the "close other tabs" option as well.

This brower is just ridiculously good.

Thanks. :)

Kap

P.S. Discovered a bug though - I have to use "Close other tabs" twice before it actually closes the other tabs. Am I missing something?

I install 2 extensions, Adblock & Nuke anything. They take care of the annoying ads for me.

I have never used the close other tabs option, probably because I use the tabs at forums and close the current tab after looking at the post.

New list of things I miss from Safari:
  • Snapback (although I honestly didn't use it that much): Page snapback and Google snapback
  • That + button on the Address Bar that let me add bookmarks with a single click

Anyone know why Firefox recognises that some sites have RSS feeds and not others?

e.g. It saw the RSS feed for www.macminute.com but not www.engadget.com

Is there any way of manually entering an RSS feed in Firefox?

Kap

I see no way to manually enter RSS feeds.

My guess is certain sites write better code than others, so Firefox reads it off the page.

Just put a folder in your Personal Toolbar Folder in the Bookmark Manager and add as many pages as you want. Once on the Toolbar, click on the folder and at the bottom Open in Tabs

I want a spell checker like Safari has. Have tried to install the one for Firefox twice and has taken.

I'd like to know where Firefox stores the bookmarks (Safari Bookmark Exporter doesn't work with Firefox).
Two. Is there a way for Firefox to "see" the saved passwords from Safari? (makes for easier migration).
Thanks
Lew

Firefox bookmarks are here;

user>library>application support>

You should be able to export the bookmarks from Safari under the Debug Menu and then import to Firefox.

You can add the Debug Menu with Safari Enhancer if you don't have it.

Thanks for the help Bob. What I discovered (just now) was that Safari Bookmarks Exporter has been upgraded to v.1.0.8 and now exports to the proper location.
