Webcam Conference Between PC And Mac

It all started at 3......
Hey guys,

A friend of mine in Costa Rica has been asking me to link up with her webcam for some time now but I've just never got round to it. However, her webcam is on a PC and not a Mac. Some time ago she tried to be put on the Webcam via MSN, but this can not be viewed from my Mac. Is it possible to have a Webcam conference via PC and Mac? If so, what software and set-up are the best for this?

I am aware that you can have a webcam conference via iChat but I don't think you can use this on the PC - correct? I'm also aware you can have a webcam conference through Skype now on the PC - but I don't think this facility is available on the Mac.

Any suggestions?

Ian

Hi Ian,
if you search for "video chat" in the forum, you will find a bunch of threads on this topic. Here a short summary:
1. AOL >5.5 --- iChatAV (video and audio chat)
2. yahoo! pc --- yahoo! mac (only video chat)
3. iSpQ pc --- iSpQ (video and audio chat)
Good luck!

Thank you for responding. Well we tried AOL with iChat but no joy... Do I also have to have a webcam plugged in for it to work? Only she has the webcam at the moment. We also couldn't get the audio to work through this either despite us both having microphones plugged in.

You know at the bottom of the iChat screen it has the three icons, one for text , one for audio, and one for video - well only the text one lights up, the other 2 are greyed out. Do you have any idea why this might be occurring?

Many thanks,

Ian

There could be many reasons it's not working yet. One might be your connection. If it is too slow, ichat would even refuse to audio chat. Another very frequent issue are nat and firewire settings. Check out our threads on ichatav troubleshooting.
Btw, you can watch others videos even when you have no webcam attached.

You need a camera connected to get the cross platform voice chat going. Here in Cairo there are thousands of cheapo cameras to work with PCs, but still only iSights to work with the Mac, but at double the already high price so that ain't happ'nin' till I hit the German Lotto (which I _don't_ buy tickets for religiously).

I'm still waiting for the chance to get a mid-price webcam that works with my iBook.

If I may shift my post a little bit off topic: I dare to say that any firewire webcam will work on a macosx mac. I got myself one from dlink for which I payed less than 10€. Check out ebay..

I used to own a logitech quickcam zoom (almost 50% cheaper than iSight) with a USB plug just had to forget about logitech driver and use this instead http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/

It worked fine with iChat 2.1 on OS X 3.9 and a Aol_AIM account to videochat with a friend of mine a M$oft wintel user.
