Website Check...

Androo

Yeah, Androo.
Hey, sry to interupt you from your daily MACOSX.COM. Could you take a minute to view my website?
Usually on my computer it looks different, whether it's a different browser, or just cuz my browser gets used to viewing the local page.
Could you check my site? Also, i wanna show it off, i've actually been working on it.
Here's the website preview:
http://penguinn.com/pengu
And, could you see if the gallery section is too slow to load, or there's a problem? thanks.
Tell me what you think.
Later,
Androo?

looked at your site using Safari. It's a little hard to read the welcome message because of the darkness of the background. The site loaded fine and did not seem slow.

coool thanks...
what about you peoples on icab? IE has been checked, i need to make some alterations.
Netscape Gecko based browsers? Netscape, Chimera or Camino, Opera (though barely anyone uses it).

Well, looks like the image posted here in Explorer 5, at 832X624... Mmmrrrbbbggg... A lot of people still run with that res. so you should try to make it good for them (me) too. Just a constructive critic. :) And yeah, you should change the font color to something darker, it'd be better. Loads fast and looks good aside from that though. Oh, put a title too, so they don't have untitled document if they bookmark it! :D

Hey, it looks great and the gallery loaded very quickly in Safari. I like the Top and the main background but the side bar seems a little much and the orangey picture with the yellow PenguiNN sort of clashes with the red color scheme of the mainpart and the top. I like it lots better than your previous site.

Androo, is your site not up all the time? I tried to check it out and I couldn't load anything. Connection timed out.

Speed is fine but I'm on a fast link at work.

Title bar
I lose the title bar at 800x600
At 1024x768 or above the image repeats and it spoils the look of the site - try removing the bevels so that the image merges with out any visible 'seams'.

Navigation bar
The orange logo with the yellow highlighted text clash
Blur effect on the Home, News... links is really effective over that background v. nice
You've got some sizing problems though... making the browser narrower leads to the nav bar being truncated.

Gallery
cool images, how about making the forward/backward buttons rollovers - give a bit more feedback to the user

Prices
Got some error messages on this page

Rest
I'm not a fan of having background images on pages displaying 'real' content, they tend to make the pages difficult to read (black text is difficult to read when it goes over the darker parts of your image). At higher resolutions your image repeats and it detracts from the overall look of the site.
No title on pages

All tests done with IE6 on w2k, I'll try it on a real computer when I get home :)

Looking forward to seeing the next version

Heh, got to look at it finally.

I'd replace the Penguinn Inc logo - not because it looks bad or anything, but because it doesn't look very professional (something I'm sure you're going for). People actually read a lot into that kinda thing, and the fuzziness might put some people off just because of that. I think those sort of people are morons, personally, but ya got to cater to 'em. I did some freelance work back when all the .com businesses were forking over money. ;)

abyard has a good point about the image backgrounds too. I know you're trying to show off graphics, more or less, but a simpler background image (or even just a plain color) would be better. Goes into those people reading things about the site again. ;)

I also get those errors on the prices and links pages...are they on purpose? The source code shows the same thing...but just in case not, here's the errors:

Warning: Unknown(d:\home\Default\penguinn.com\htdocs\pengu\comingsoon.php): failed to create stream: No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0

Warning: Unknown(): Failed opening 'd:\home\Default\penguinn.com\htdocs\pengu\comingsoon.php' for inclusion (include_path='.;c:\php4\pear') in Unknown on line 0

The site does load fast for me. I am on a cable connection, though.

I get the same results as my previous post when using the following browsers under os9.2:
Netscape 7.0
Mozilla 1.0.2
IE5
Opera6

The only one that causes any problems is iCab, it was very slow to download the nav bar and i had to manually stretch the window to see all of the nav.
oh yeah, and your text is tiny in iCab

I don't think there's enough on the web site at the moment to cause too many cross browser issues (but at least you are considering it now) when you start doing a bit more layout and including JavaScript you'll be glad that you started checking early.

You've got a few spelling mistakes in your text as well, this tends to put potential clients off.
You might want to think about the formatting of the text (paragraphs) at the moment its one large chunk of text and my brain can't cope with that :)

I like Penguinninc logo (but i'd either put some spacing between penguinn and inc or raise the baseline of inc).

It looks like you're attempting to create a "blurred" look that really clashes with the frameset - blurred images, but with that stark contrast. Also, spelling error ("quesetions" should be "questions") on home page and you could make the "webmaster@penguinn.com" into a mailto: link so people could click right on the text to email you. But, I'd be careful as to the email addresses you publish on your website because spammers harvest them.

Hmm, a few more things;

Definitely design the frameset to work and look good with all sizes the browser window could be set at. Your logo sure gets cropped when sized down. Maybe just have the same image with the logo on the left instead.

Also, you have the left frame set to a percentage when it should be a fixed pixel size (200 pizels bases on the navigation image.)

Good luck!
