Well, turns out that logging out and back in fixed everything... but check this out!
The upper left window shows the Users folder, with "john" and "shared" (what the HELL is that stupid shared thing anyway???). Missing is my home folder, which should be "solrac"!!!
The lower left window shows a search results for "solrac", and it did find my home folder there, on one of the blank paper icons. And my home folder icon shows up in the path navigation at the bottom of that window! (That was a relief.)
The lower right window came from double clicking on the "library" folder in the path nav at the bottom of the lower left window. Look at it! No home folder! It just randomly starts at the Library folder iwth nothing to the left of it!!
The upper right terminal window shows that "solrac" is still indeed in the Users directory. (Of course, all the stuff on my desktop was still working too.)
