Weird problem after upgrading to Leopard

After upgrading my son's G4 MDD from Tiger to Leopard, we could no longer log in to the machine. I tried resetting his password AND the root password (both to an empty password and a new one), but neither would work. I'm hoping not to have to wipe this machine, but I can't think of any other solution.

I've done this upgrade on several other MDD Macs, and this is the first time I've seen this issue.

Any ideas?
