What OS and type of computer are you using? Are you able to post a screenshot of this "radioactive symbol"?

DMG files are Apple Disc iMaGe files. They are regularly used as a way of packaging software for distribution, but only on Macs.

Definition here:

When you download a dmg file you are supposed to then double click it. Then open that disk image that appears (could be a drive or other more unique icon) and drag the app to the app folder, along with whatever documentation comes with that software.

i think he means the 'burn disk' icon in finder.

The '.dmg' file format, explained (via Wikipedia).

If ... the unknown name '.dmg' file (from an unknown web site) has an icon of a radioactive symbol (such as this, or an equivalent) - either someone, or somehow - MacOS X, has assigned an application, other than 'DiskImageMounter.app', to process the '.dmg' file(s) when double clicked on. (See below, how to reassign 'DiskImageMounter.app' to properly process all '.dmg' files.)

The typical icon of a .dmg file can be seen here. When the '.dmg' file is double clicked on, a disk image (such as the one shown here) should then appear on your 'Desktop' (sometimes, its respective window will open; or at other times, you will have to double click on it - to open its respective window).

Inside the opened window may be files, folders, and / or applications (either an installer or the actual application).

How one proceeds from here, depends on the contents of the disk image window.

-----

Reassigning 'DiskImageMounter.app' to '.dmg' files.

01. Click on any '.dmg' file.
02. Select the ('Finder') 'File, Get Info' menu item. A 'Get Info' window will appear.
03. Locate the 'Open with:' section and click on the disclosure triangle - if it is 'not' pointing down. The popup menu should display 'DiskImageMounter.app (default)'. If so, reply stating such. If not, continue.
04. Click on the popup menu and from the list select 'DiskImageMounter.app' (if possible); otherwise, click on 'Other...' - and a navigation window (titled 'Choose Other Application') will then appear.
05. Navigate to the '/System/Library/CoreServices/' folder and click once on 'DiskImageMounter.app', if an 'Always Open With' check box is present - then click on the check box to add a check mark, and then click on the 'Add' button. The window will close.
06. Under 'Open with:' (in the 'Get Info' window) click on the 'Change All' button. A window will appear.
07. Click on the 'Continue' button.
08. Click on the 'Get Info' window's 'red' jelly bean crayola crayon 'close' button.

Hopefully, MacOS X will be able to retain this setting.
