What crashes 10.3.2 ?

Since I updated to 10.3.2, Safari and other 'apple' apps seem to be the root of crashes, sometimes at startup of the app. No windows appear, sometimes the spinning beachball appears. Then, when I try to 'force quit', often the whole Mac crashes.

Sometimes it already crashes after startup, sometimes it takes 2 startups to get it working again.

I tried the usual: repairing rights, PRAM zapping.

Powerbook won't startup in 'Single user mode' when I keep the 's' pressed either.

Any ideas?

Did you update from OS X 10.2.x [Jaguar] directly to 10.3.2 [Panther] or did you update from 10.3.x to 10.3.2?

Quite a number of people have been experiencing problems when updating from Jaguar to Panther.

When you upgraded to 10.3 - did you use Update or did you use Archive, preserve and install?

Many people had trouble with the individual system updates 10.3.1 and then 10.3.2. It is highly suggested to do the combined update to 10.3.2

OK, that might be it. Nice solution.

BUT that's a passed station. Of course I've updated to 10.3, then to 10.3.1 and later to 10.3.2 when they became available.

What's the point of updates anyway, if you have to reinstall the whole thing again first??

I have a new G5 Dual 2Ghz, pre-installed with 10.3.0 upgraded by me to 10.3.2. When I launch OSX Mail my G5 occassionally crashes with exactly the same symptoms described above.

I've noticed a few hiccups with Mac OS X 10.3.2 Panther on my B&W 500MHz G3. I just got the Panther CDs and performed a fresh install. I copied my entire user folder to my friend's PowerBook G4, then did a complete install. After the install was complete, I installed EVERY Apple Panther update sequentially until I arrived at 10.3.2. When I burn CDs, sometimes the CD will not mount immediately after the burn; then I have to use the Disk Utility to eject the disk. When I insert the CD, everything is fine. When the computer has been setting idle for a while, like me getting up and walking away for 30 minutes and returning, the system seems "frozen" and won't respond. The screen saver won't activate, in fact, the LCD monitor indicates that "No Signal" is present. The only way to recover from this is by turning off the power to the computer and restarting.

Panther is surprizingly fast, M$ Word is up and running in about 3 to 4 seconds, Preview is the FASTEST PDF viewer for the Mac now, Dock magnification animation (smoothness) now matches my friend's PowerBook G4. Quite impressive over all, but I miss the transparent Window bars when they are in the background.

Any suggestions for these crashes?

Yep (Disk Utility), I even run it automaticly.

I cleared up some HD space and for now it seems to help... [fingers crossed]

I have a new G5 Dual 1.8, preinstalled with 10.3.0 and me upgrading it to 10.3.2. I think I had the same problem. Apple Apps like Safari, Mail and iCal wouldn't launch. The icon would just bounce in the dock for a second, then nothing. I went back to 10.3.0.

Also, in Safari I've had a crash where my desktop completely locks up and the darkens with a message saying to restart the machine by holding down the start key.

That'll ruin my morning.

You won't believe it, but I found the solution (and the problem in the first place)...

If you are using a Draytek Vigor router (like me and a zillion others) and you update to OSX 10.3.2, your Mac can get seriously instable.

The solution: update your Draytec Vigor firmware. You can find the firmware update on the net, as well as info on how to upload it to your router.

You're welcome,

I found something that crashed my iBook t'other day.

I was copying some files from my G4 while my iBook was just running from its battery.

The screen dimmed and I just managed to catch it before it went to sleep on me [story of my life, that .. but I digress]

The screen lit up, the mouse pointer moved, but everything had totally locked up [grrrr!]

And the moral of this story is: if you copy, plug into the mains first...
