What does "Push Sync" actually mean?

Okay, I can get my .mac mail and my POP server mail without too much difficulty, although if I try to get e-mail where I can get neither Wi-Fi, 3G, nor EDGE, mail will eventually stop even trying and then I have to power-cycle the iPhone to even make it check for mail. I can live with that, I suppose.

But what the hell does Apple mean by "push sync" for anything else? Calendar entries from the iPhone to either MobilMe or the Mac I sync to don't seem to happen until at least half an hour after sync, and even calendar entries made on MobileMe aren't reflected on the iPhone until after an iTunes sync with my Mac—and sometimes not even then. Does iPhone's calendar sync at all over the air? Or is "push sync" a complete misnomer for anything other than e-mail?
