what type of DVD's can the apple superdrive read? only DVD-Rs or can it read both

They "should" read any DVD-/+R media in the same way as they should write any DVD-R.

I think actually that with Toast, or iDVD5 that you can burn to most DVD+R/RW discs and DVD-RW as well....

burning DVD+R/RW media with the (not anymore) current superdrives? Nope! With the today-released superdrives it will work.

AFAIK, you can burn DVD+R/RW media with the older Superdrives -- just not through Apple's software. IIRC, Toast will do it, and the Finder will do it, but not iDVD, iTunes or DVD Studio Pro.

For reading only (not burning), the Superdrive will read just about any DVD media out there -- +R, -R, +RW, -RW, -RAM, etc.
