What exactly does USB connect require?

The iPod photo will apparently get USB connect, which I understand will allow it to get pictures directly off of USB cameras.

This got me to thinking - what is stopping Apple from adding USB connect across the iPod line? Is there something significantly different in the iPod photo's dock connector which enables this feature?

Probably not hardware... more like a software limitation. Besides, you couldn't view the photos on the 4-shade grey screen!

I'm sure it's entirely possible, but that may possibly detract from the sales of the already slow iPod photo.

Belkin already offer two products that allow you to store photos on any iPod with doc connector:

One
Two

I'd be fairly surprised if the Apple one didn't work in a similar way to the Belkin Digital Camera Link, and suspect it will work with other iPods - you just won't be able to view the photos.

I also hope the update to the iPod photos will allow them to display photos imported using the Belkin Media Reader (as I already have one of those).

It's in the iPod Photo's software. The device that they'll be selling will store them in the iPod's photo library and you can view them directly on the iPod. From there I believe you can sync them back to your Mac as well.

Yup -- but the pictures transferred from the camera to the iPod photo will not be immediately viewable via video-out... you gotta sync back to your computer before that happens.

Other than that, I'm anxiously awaiting it! The Belkin thing is gigantic, and you can't look at the photos. I'm hoping the Apple adaptor will be compact and easy -- anyone got any links to photos of it?

Don't care that much about viewing the photos, more about storing them.

A 6G iPod mini would be more than sufficient for my needs, but I don't want to get that horrible Belkin thing - I just want to attach a cable between my camera and iPod and press a button.

Well running Linux on the iPod will allow you to view photos on the gray-scale iPod-mini or iPod.. I'm pretty impressed with the version of Linux for the iPod.

I'm hoping the update for the new camera connector will also fix the second problem there. The first one doesn't bother me too much, as It's easily small enough to keep in a back-pack.

Yes, the Apple adaptor will allow you to view photos on the iPod -- however, in order to be able to view the photos on a TV, you must first sync with the computer. You can't download photos to the iPod via Apple's adaptor and immediately view the photos on a TV or via video-out (you can only see them on the iPod's screen initially before syncing).

Is it the adapter that will allow that, or will the iPods photo import software be updated to allow that? Will the software be updated so that photos imported with the Belkin Media Reader will also be viewable on the iPod? - I really hope this happens!

Most likely, it's both.

I doubt it, but possibly.
