What is /etc/master.passwd

I have a G4 which, up until today, has run super smooth. Suddenly, as I was rebooting from Classic back into X, I was taken to the Unix level with the message, "/etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory" Does anyone know what this means and how to get back to life? I cannot run "fsck -y" as there is no localhost# prompt, only #. I have also tried booting from a cd only to have the tray come shooting back in my face, laughing all the way, as I hold the "c" key. Any thoughts would be awesome! Thanks.

you can fsck at the # prompt. in single user mode, that s all the prompt looks like. as what the file does, i m not sure, but looking at it, mine is identical to /etc/passwd. so maybe its a backup, or default for /etc/passwd? anyway, both of these files are only used in single user mode. hopefully fsck -y / should fix you. you might have to "mount -uw /" first?

not being able to boot from the CD is very strange and somewhat worrisome. no matter how f-ed up your system gets, it shouldn t change your ability to boot the CD. in fact you should be able to boot from CD even if there is no HDD at all. if you can t boot from your CD, that sounds like a firmware problem or even a hardware problem...

Thanks for the info. I was finally able to boot from the cd and managed to fix the problem with Disk Warrior. It looks like it was a simple category glitch. Anyway, I'm happy now.
