I have noticed a drastic slowdown of my Power Mac G4 Dual 1.25 with 1 GB RAM. OSX 10.4.6

It used to run much faster. But recently it has been crashing daily and the mouse wheel loves to keep spinning.

Does anyone know what I can do to get it back to Normal? I tried doing an archieve install on the system to get the software back to default.

Does anyone know what this "mdimport" in the processor window is for? It is taking up a ton of my computing power I think. And is aways running.

I am ready for a new apple, but want to wait for the Intel PowerMac. Thus I need to make this Mac last a bit longer for my photo and video editing.

Thanks for your help.

mdimport seems to be part of spotlight. It may be that spotlight is trying to index your hard drive. It may be a bit technical, but see:

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Carbon/Conceptual/MDImporters/Concepts/Troubleshooting.html

"Endless Indexing

Spotlight's indexes are maintained by the Tiger behind the scenes. Unfortunately, some users have discovered the 'mdimport' process sucking up nearly all their computer resources, apparently reading files from disk for indexing, but running for days and not finishing. Unlike initial indexing when Tiger is first installed, the Spotlight menu is available for use in this scenario, but does not return complete results. Apple Mail and Finder searches also may fail to return full results."
