What is this cable doing in the box?

Hi!

My Apple Pro Keyboard just died, and I bought an Apple Keyboard. In the box, there was a USB cable, one side is female and the other side is male. I thought it was an extension for the USB jack. However, I noticed the female side has a small part that will prevent any standard USB cable to fit in.

For those who bought an Apple Keyboard (the 109 keys, $49 at Apple Store USA online) do you know what this cable is for?

Thanks!

It's standard with all Apple USB keyboards. It's a keyboard cable extension. Look at the end of your keyboard cable - it has the corresponding notch.

Yeah... great for extending the length of your USB keyboard's distance... but bad for anything else. Too bad they won't let you use it with anything else.... kinda ticks me off.

I used to just use a Stanley knife to cut off the plastic collar that prevents you from hooking it up to any other kind of USB cable.
Even then you need about three chained together, I get in Belkin 2 metre extension cablesfor keyboard extenders now...
