What is this? Default catch! Open Firmware

After trying to install drivers for an Epson printer, when ever I reboot I get a tan screen and this screen:

"Default Catch ! code = ffff....... %SRR0 ff80b718 ....

Welcome to Open firmware....
to continue booting .... "mac-boot"
......"

Typing in mac-boot makes it go on to the login screen. Also, the screen behind this error message is tan/white and not at all like single user.

Any clues to make this go away much appreciated.

Sounds like an older iMac ??
That screen is an Open Firmware error screen. You can enter this on purpose, by holding option-Apple-O-F as you boot, (although it should NOT show the 'Default Cache' error)
This may be a good plan to reset your system. Boot into that Open Firmware screen as above.
Type reset-nvram (don't forget the hyphen) and press enter, you should see an OK
type reset-all and press enter again.
Your system should reboot normally

Still get that same error? Try disconnecting your printer, and reinstalling the printer software, unless you gave up. You may find some updated software at the web site for the printer manufacturer.
If this continues for you, you should troubleshoot as if you have a 'kernel panic'. There's several good threads here that can help you with that.

Thanks! Did the first tactic and it did not work. Did the second tactic--unplugging my USB printer--and it seemed to work. Replugging the printer and an rebooting brings the problem back, however. I'll see if Epson has a more uptodate driver installer next. Thanks for your help!
